The Gold Maple Leaf was the first .999+ fine gold bullion coin, launched in 1979 while the Krugerrand was embargoed. Since 1982 it has been struck in .9999 fine gold — one troy ounce (31.103 g) of pure gold with no alloying metal, making it softer and easier to mark than 22-karat bullion.
